Project classes: (these classes have a project as the primary objective)
“PERKIOMEN NINE PATCH”Full Day
This interesting variation of the classic nine patch quilt is a tradition in the Perkiomen Valley of Pennsylvania. While it has the simplicity of a nine patch, it encompasses the flexibility of log cabin. The setting possibilities abound. Fabric selection is key to the success of the quilt. Color is secondary to the importance of the values of the hues. Emphasis is placed on contrast. The block size makes it possible to include many different scales and colors so long as contrast is preserved. Techniques include rotary cutting, machine piecing and set planning. The workshop will cover the block construction and a significant start toward enough blocks for a bed quilt (or you can quit with a wall hanging or crib size).

CLASSIC ENGLISH MEDALLION-21st century style” Full Day
With an overview of the classic style of English medallion style quilts students will get a glimpse of this style which influenced our quilts in both the late 18th and early 19th centuries and throughout the development of quiltmaking. With the concept in hand we will take a quantum leap into the 21st century. As Only three size strips are used for all the basic units; we can sometime use the leftovers from one cutting to make the next borders. We will begin modestly with a wall hanging project but because of the style it may be the start of ‘something big’. This is also a good introduction to quick pieced border options.

VILLAGE COMMONS” Full Day
An adaptation of the traditional “Boston Commons” pattern. By selecting a stripe (or border) fabric or medium to large print as theme or focus you can quickly build your quilt with a sequence of pieced panels and your stripe or focus fabric. The construction employs very simple strip piecing, rotary cutting and mitered corners to yield a traditional style quilt in a fraction of the time.

THE FINE ART OF HAND QUILTING Full or Half Day
A sampler of quilting designs in a 15 inch pillow top is designed to sharpen your quilting skills, achieve a smaller, even stitch and help develop good quilting techniques. A pattern for the sampler is provided. Students will use various marking techniques. Class discussion includes information on batting , threads and needles.
WASTE NOT WANT NOT: An Amish Scrap quiltFull Day
Explore the use of solid scraps to create a scrap quilt in the Amish tradition. While the selection of block designs used by the Amish may seem limited, the limitations are offset by the palette of possibilities. You will select from recognized standards like Ocean Waves, Sawtooth, and Ohio Star or from a myriad of other designs generated by experimenting with a single template. This is a project class designed to begin a wall hanging or crib size piece. You will explore design options and color juxtaposition.
MARINER’S COMPASS:Full or Half Day
No block design holds more fascination than the mariner’s compass. It has long been held in awe because of its apparent difficulty both to draft and stitch. In reality the drafting is not terribly daunting and the piecing is much more simple than many star blocks. A basic mariner’s compass has no set in right angle pieces in the basic construction and no cluster of eight points to match in the center. It can be as simple or diverse as you choose in the number of fabrics used for construction. The class combines drafting and construction. Try it--you’ll love it!
MASTERPIECE LONE STAR:Full Day
Construct a beautiful approximately 60 inch Lone Star top reminiscent of those you admire from the nineteenth century. Students will use 15 different print or solids or a combination of fabrics to fill 15 positions in the star. Master this complex quilt construction using quick strip piecing and modular units. We will discuss additional borders and other options for increasing the size of the quilt.
ETERNAL TRIANGLE, A scrap quilt class:Full Day
Explore the endless options of quilts made essentially from right angle triangles. By participating in an initial exchange of fabrics to expand you scrap collection even quilters with a small stash can make a quilt with up to two hundred fabrics. Cutting and piecing are simple and the design options are both exciting and mesmerizing.
HIDDEN SIGNS:Half day
This is a workshop in cutwork, needle turned applique. Students design their own hidden sign. The design may contain your initials, monogram, sorority letters, or corporate letters. The project is pillow or frame-able size, about 15-18 inches. The stitching emphasis will be on hand, needle turned applique technique. For future projects you may hand or machine applique or you may simply fuse the design for framing.
BRODERIE PERSEFull or Half Day
A technique from the early nineteenth century which allowed American women to make the most of the very expensive imported chintz decorator fabrics. The old is new again and is just right for today’s gorgeous prints. Learn the placement and stitch for executing the fabulous effects of cut out fabric appliqué. The project will be modest, a 14”-16” panel suitable for a pillow, sham, of central panel in a larger wall quilt.

PROCESS CLASSES: (process or design is the primary objective)
CREATING SPARKLING SETS:Full or Half Day
A design workshop to stimulate new and creative ideas for putting your quilts together with spark and sparkle. No more plain lattice strips or blank alternate blocks. You will be surprised by the secondary blocks and designs which will emerge as you work. It’s more fun if the frame measures up to the picture so don’t let the set be an after thought. Students are invited to bring groups of blocks in search of a set.
TRICKY HAND PIECING: Full or Half Day
While you may think that hand piecing is too slow, there are some tricks which can make the work go faster. There are tips which can accelerate the work and maintain maximum accuracy. Some tricks of the trade will help simlify complicated patterns. In the full day version of the workshop students will try their hand at compass designs and curved piecing. You will be so sly after this workshop that you may find hand piecing more satisfying than you thought possible!
BASIC PATTERN DRAFTING:Half Day
Learn to draft traditional quilt blocks. Concentration is on designs based a grid such as four patch, nine patch, and other equally divided grids. In addition students will draft an eight point star and look at baby blocks, and hexagonal designs. After teaching high school math, I am prepared to help students conquer their anxiety about the process and show how simply you can draft or redraft to change block size.
ADVANCED PATTERN DRAFTING:Half Day
Building on basic drafting skills, you will draft more complicated designs including some based on eight pointed star variations, Mariner’s Compass, and experiment with original design efforts.
IT’S NOT A QUILT UNTIL IT’S QUILTED:   (emphasis on hand quilting )   Full or Half Day
It is called a quilt in anticipation of quilting, but they never seem to tell you how to get those lovely designs onto your quilt top. Where do they come from, how to design them, how to make them fit the spaces ? These are the questions to which the workshop will seek answers. Students will look at feathers and cables, how to gauge borders, original designs, potential design sources and more. They will explore means of transferring the design motifs to fabric, marking tools and types of batting and threads. While information may be applied to machine quilting the thrust here is for hand quilted projects.
